SOLD  **  BOROVNIK Best Quality Sidelock Double, two 28" barrel sets – 20ga  – cased, Mint

Description:
LUDWIG BOROVNIK’S BEST QUALITY SIDE LOCK EJECTOR SXS DOUBLE 20 gauge, single trigger, ca. 1980.

Ludwig Borovnik, Bahnhofstraße 7 | 9170 Ferlach | Austria, is a world-renown gunmaker and one that is arguably the finest of that fraternity of best makers in Ferlach, a mecca of the best gun and rifle makers in Europe and perhaps the world.

Want to impress your fellow quail-hunters, this classic top-quality bird gun has two sets of 28” ejector barrels made from high tensile Böhler special steel with Borovnik proofs, one set choked modified/modified (.015/,018) and the other set choked improved cylinder/ improved modified (.023/.025). Both have flat concave hand-filed ribs with a small bead front sight.

While most of the Italian and Austrian best sidelock ejector side-by-sides are clones of the Holland & Holland Royal, for this gun Ludwig Borovnik chose to emulate Purdey, the undisputed King of sidelock side-by-sides. This Purdey-type action is made up of twin seven-pin sidelocks with cocking indicators, bushed strikers with locking screws, and locks up with the tried and true Purdey double underlug locking system. The action lever is checkered for either the right hand or left hand shooter.

For the design, Borovnik chose the Purdey style with a Prince of Wales grip with a semi-beavertail forearm rather than the more traditional straight-hand stock with splinter forearm.  Keeping to the classics, the maker set the gun up with two barrel sets and four chokes rather than shaving down the muzzles to fit them with removable chokes.

The receiver and sidelocks are highly engraved with the finest full coverage scroll and deep relief game scene with gold inlay, executed by a Master Engraver but as is the practice in Austria and Germany, the artisans do not sign their work. On the left lock is a realistic engraving of a duck in flight landing on the water, inlaid in gold.  On the right lock is a realistic engraving of a quail startled in flight, inlaid in gold. This is all very custom work and specific to this gun.

The meticulous engraving covers the side profiles and the fences continuing over the frame and down the wide top tang and the hold-over action lever, fully covering the underside and the inlaid Deeley & Edge forearm release and a portion of the trigger bow. Just examine the incredible engraving and all the engraved screw heads.

Where the barrels meet the action, the engraver has included a broken ring of oak leaves to show-case the rust blued barrels. In addition to the barrels, the trigger guard with lower tang and top lever are blued. The remainder of the engraved metal work is finished in coin finish. The upper and lower tangs are meticulously inlaid into the stock at fine points.

The safety is automatic, the Holland & Holland selective Southgate ejectors are automatic and the single trigger is a Boss non-selective.

The stock work is as amazing as the metal work.  Made of 4X fancy English walnut, the deluxe figured stock has a classic comb, Prince of Wales pistol grip and matching semi-beavertail forearm. The grain has great figure and rich colors. If that isn’t enough, the point checkering is 26 lpi executed by a master checkerer using a combination of double and single borders in a multi-point pattern famous for Prince of Wales grips and having the appearance of wrapping the forearm but interrupted by the forearm release centered in the pattern.

Measurements are 14 1/8” length of pull from trigger to checkered butt with 1 ½” drop at comb and 2 1/4” drop at heel. Weight is 6 lb. 2 oz.

Condition: This shotgun is near mint condition showing little use. It retains all the blue on the barrels and all the polished coin finish on the frame and side locks. Wood and checkering look the way they left the maker in 1980. The bores are mint and ring like chimes.  The shotgun remains mechanically perfect and is presented in a fitted leather trunk case with accessories and the maker’s label. This ensemble would cost you approximately $32,750 ordered from the maker today.
