Description:
Here is an interesting "Z" Marked Confederate Captued & Collected Gun. This was definitely there and done that. Highly used but all matching and missing rear sight and saddle ring bar / ring. Bottom of buttstock is marked with a "Z" which most authorities believe is the marking for Confederate Captured Guns. Interestingly enough this carbine has been what looks like converted to a shotgun. Notice the alteration to the nipple area and the addition of a make shift firing pin. Hammer was replaced to accommodate the new location of the firing pin. The bore was opened up quite a bit but interestingly enough, it still shows some good rifling. Was this done during the war or after the war as a souvenir? Further research my produce some very valuable results. Please feel free to ask questions. The "Z" Marked Confederate Captured & Collected Gun Operations Were Supervised By Capt. Louis Zimmer In Richmond VA from 1864 to 1865. The Guns Were Then Reissued To The Various Confederate Soldiers & Regiments That Needed Them. This Is A Very Nice All Original Example Of An Early Confederate Captured "Z" Marked U.S. Civil War Military Issued Smith Artillery Carbine That Would Be A Great Addition to Any Fine Collection!
