Description:
Serial #5971, .25-21 Stevens, 26 inch # 1 marked part octagon / part round barrel with a near excellent bore with strong rifling and slight roughness near the breech. This is the Ideal No. 44 rifle marked "J. Stevens A. & T. Co." with two line address on the barrel, early serial number and early square cut breech in a caliber introduced in 1897 making this a pre 1898 antique. Possibly one of the first made in .25-21 Cal. In excellent overall condition the barrel shows about 80-85% blue thinning in spots with silvering on the high edges, freckling and some scratches. The receiver, butt plate, lever and hammer show most of the original, vibrant case hardened color with some light scratches and a dime size area of light pitting on the right side above the trigger. It is sighted with a tang mounted, flip up rear aperture sight, dove tail blank in the rear slot and the original flip up combination front sight. The walnut stock and forearm rate about excellent with light use marks and a small ¼ inch crack running with the grain on the right upper rear corner of the forearm. The rotating block action functions properly and locks up tight. An near excellent example in a scarce caliber. Antique
