Description:
The Ruger AR556 is one of the more recent entries to the AR market compared to older models like the DPMS Oracle or the Colt SP-1. The version identified by the SKU number of 8529 features an 11-inch long free float handguard, which is M-LOK compatible having slots in the 3:00, 6:00, and 9:00 positions, with additional slots on the angled faces near the muzzle. It is designed around the concept of low-weight and compactness to minimize bulk. Other furniture includes Ruger’s own MOE-like pistol grip, and a 6-position, telescoping, M4-style buttstock. Like most AR15’s, the AR556’s receivers are made from forged 7075 T6 aluminum. The rifle has a 16.1-inch barrel with a heavy contour for rigidity. It is made of cold hammer-forged alloy steel and has a 1:8 rifling twist to stabilize the wide range of bullet weights available for the .223/5.56 round, ranging from the light 35 gr to the heavy 77 gr types. The barrel sports a matte black oxide finish for high resistance against the elements. Ruger’s special muzzle brake uses a radial port design intended to reduce muzzle rise. The 8529 uses a carbine-length gas system. The rifle does not come with iron sights but is optic ready. The bolt is machined from very hard 9310 steel, while the bolt carrier group is made from 8620 steel. Controls are a standard one-side safety and G.I. charging handle. This example of the AR-556 uses a single-stage trigger for both reliability and durability in the long term. The trigger guard is bowed out for ease of use with gloved hands during wintertime. Despite all this, the AR556 8529 model weighs in at a respectable 6.7 lbs. – roughly the standard weight for a M4 style AR15. This new-in-box rifle comes with one 30-round Magpul magazine.
