Description:
This is an original, rare and lesser known of the Post Civil War Naval brass hilted bayonets for the U.S. Navy M1870 Remington Rolling block rifle, the Type 2 being somewhat more distinctive. It is a lovely yataghan style sword bayonet with a 20" blade, measuring 25” overall. It features a distinctive solid brass hilt with a feather/scale design cast into the grip. The blade is marked on one side “Ames Co. Chicopee, Mass”. The other side is marked U.S.N. G.G.S. 1870.
The pommel is cast with the U.S. Crossed Cannons overlaying an Anchor and still bears the U.S. Inspector's initials of G.G.S. it is in nice untouched condition with some staining but is still in great shape.
