This is a handsome revolver that has both 1st Model and 2nd Model features (1st Model frame with 2nd Model latch and hammer). There are matching numbers on the frame, barrel, cylinder, and latch, with the metal retaining 70-75% of the original bright blue finish remaining, and pale gray on the balance. Some muted color case-hardening remains on the sides of the 2nd type notched hammer, and on the trigger guard. The revolver was once fit with a lanyard swivel on the butt, but now has only a filler screw on the strap. The genuine ivory grips have a wonderful brown age patina, with some minor age cracks at the butt and on the right side panel. They have shrunk slightly, but still fit snugly within the grip frame. The lock-up is still tight, with no lateral play in the barrel. The revolver comes with an exceptionally well-made and attractive period gun rig that consists of a dark brown leather waist belt with integral cartridge loops and a japanned brass buckle. The revolver is housed in a matching brown leather Mexican loop style holster with scalloped edges, four loops, and a military-style closure strap with brass stud. The belt and holster are expertly made, and exhibit minor flaking and crazing throughout, heaviest on the cartridge loops of the belt. A 2018-dated Smith & Wesson factory letter also accompanies the revolver and lists a sale date of February 21, 1872, to M.W. Robinson Co. of New York City. This is a stunning gun and rig, in excellent condition, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. Antique SOLD Antique: Yes |
