Sharps Rifle Company received complaints from the long range shooters, who were forced to limit rifle weight to 10 lbs by NRA for the rifles they used in competitions, such that they assembled lighter, under-dimensioned barrels to the 1874 heavy frame, resulting in vibration and recoil problems.
The solution was introduced by Charles E Overbaugh, the sales manager at Sharps Rifle Company, who redesigned the 1874 frame model, reducing its weight and enabling the fitting of barrels suitable for competition. Thus, the 1877 model was created.
