Early Metallic Cartridge Revolver!
Here we present an antique Jacob Rupertus 8-Shot Pepperbox Spur Trigger Revolver, made circa the mid-1860s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Jacob Rupertus was an American handgun designer and manufacturer. Rupertus was born in Bavaria sometime around 1822 or 1823 and died in Laurel Springs, New Jersey, on February 14, 1921. Sometime around 1849, he wed Caroline Bechtel, who had been born on February 12, 1831 in Leiterswiller, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. Rupertus founded the Rupertus Patented Pistol Manufacturing Company, which was located 1924 North 4th Street in Philadelphia and was in operation between 1859 and 1899. On July 19, 1864 he received the U.S. patent No. 43.606 for a revolver with a rotating multi-shot pepper-box.
During a time when many, if not most people carried a firearm, these affordable little pepperbox revolvers were small enough to conceal and carry, yet provide a good level of protection or peace of mind, even when the town did not allow firearms within its limits.
This little spur trigger was made in the waning times of the Civil War. Handguns like this were commonly privately purchased by soldiers for use on the battlefield. Whether legend or fact, it is interesting to note something commonly read about pocket revolvers of the day, that while they could be used for self-defense against the enemy, many soldiers kept them on their person to defend themselves against an unwanted amputation in the primitive field hospitals that were notorious, even in their day.
The overall condition is good. Patina. The action is strong and crisp. The bores are in good condition with patina. The grips show use and the back of one panel was chipped and continued use smoothed it out. Slight movement of grip panels to the frame. A very neat and rare pepperbox revolver from the 1860s!
