Description:
General Specs: Ithaca, Year 1933, 28 Gauge, 5lbs. 13oz., Chokes IC/M, LOP 14", DAH 2 13/16", DAC 1 1/2"
Serial Number: 459171
For any serious shooter/collector, small-bore American Doubles are the pinnacle of desirability.  Few in numbers, when it comes to the 28ga. only two American double gun producers come into play; Parker and Ithaca.  Parker guns built on the “00” frame specific to the 28ga. are very costly, starting at about $15,000 for the VH grade gun with no engraving and little condition.  The Ithaca “New Ithaca Double” (NID) is a gun with brilliant mechanics, super-strong receiver, and affordable cost. The NID was the last rendition of side x side produced by the Ithaca Gun Co. from 1926 through 1949.  The NID was touted as Ithaca’s strongest action ever, second only to the venerable Winchester Model 21.  Only 415 NID guns were produced in 28ga. including all grades, with 295 of them the plain Field Grade, and only 42 built in Grade 1 décor.   This little NID, sn459171 built in 1933, is a find with incredible factory wood, 98% factory barrel blue, mirror bores, superb mechanics, excellent screws and wood-to-metal fit, 90% vivid factory case color, and 85% factory trigger guard blue.  This is a VFI CERTIFIED GUN, having been stripped to its smallest parts, Ultrasonic cleaned to shiny metal, all parts inspected for function and viability, lubricated, and reassembled.  VFI CERTIFIED GUNS have a 90-day mechanical warranty, a $275 service in our shop.  Weighing a scant 5lbs. 13oz., the 26” IC/M barrels are tight on the hinge pin and breech face like a new gun, and the highly figured wood has been restored by VFI with a fine hand-rubbed TruOil finish.  This gun has all factory original parts, including the original factory buttplate.  To increase LOP to 14 ½” (14” with butt plate), we installed a very rare, original vintage Hawkins pad that is only ¾” thick, THE ONLY ONE I HAVE EVER SEEN IN 30 YEARS OF CHASING AMERICAN DOUBLE GUNS.  They are usually 1” thick and look a bit clumsy on a petite 28ga. gun. It looks great on the gun, AND THE BUTTPLATE WILL FIT BACK ON THE GUN TO PERFECTION WITH TWO SCREWS.  WE DID NOT ALTER THE BUTT OF THE GUN IN ANY WAY WHEN INSTALLING THE PAD.  What a perfect small-bore doublegun for your upland pursuits or clay target games.  Ithaca guns are the most undervalued of all the early American double gun makers and are the very best investment you can find.  Any 28ga. American double gun is a very rare and desirable shotgun, but to FIND AN ENGRAVED ITHACA NID WITH HIGH ORIGINAL FACTORY CONDITION AND DESIRABLE FEATURES IS AN OPPORTUNITY THAT WILL NOT LIKELY PRESENT ITSELF AGAIN.  The 28ga. is fun to shoot as well, with minimal recoil and great patterns.  This gun shipped with F/F chokes.  Along the way it was altered to a more useful IC/M gun.  See the specifications below.  Great stock dimensions, ultralight, and eye candy for sure!  Don’t miss out on this one.  They never come up for sale.  Thanks for looking!
