ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING AND RARE COLT LONG ARMS I'VE OFFERED: COLT LIGHTNING SPECIAL ORDER "BABY CARBINE," .44-40, MADE WITH SLING SWIVELS AND WITHOUT A SADDLE RING, #66XXX, MADE 1893. The Baby Carbine was simply a light barrel version of the standard saddle ring carbine. They are easy to spot as there is a visible gap between the barrel and the mag tube. On standard carbines there is no gap at all. Unlike many Lightning Carbines, this one does not have any British Proof Marks- a number of these went to Australia and India. This is the first Lightning Carbine I've seen that was made without the saddle ring, but provided with special sling swivels made just for this model with an inletted rear swivel and a special barrel/mag tube band front swivel. The rare 27" barrel miliitary model has these same swivels and some military carbines did also- almost all of these were shipped to Costa Rica. Interestingly, Marlin offered the same thing on their Model 1895 carbine- either a saddle ring or sling swivels. This is also one of the better carbines I've encountered as most saw hard use. The receiver shows fine blue with some plum mixing from age mainly on the left side by the rampant colt stamping. Exc. blue on the dust cover and even shows good blue on the upper and lower tangs and trigger guard. Exc. stock and forend with sharp checkering on the forend. Exc. mag blue with fine blue on the barrel with only some thinning/wear to the top above the forend/pump and a few light scratches around the barrel band swivel. The action is tight and locks up correctly (when the hammer is cocked it stays locked, many are worn and don't lock up when cocked). the bore is bright and excellent. A really rare Baby Carbine and doubly rare in that it was special ordered with no ring and swivels!
