Offered for your consideration is this fine model 1895 Winchester take down Sporting Rifle in 30-40 Krag caliber. Made in 1924, the barrel is 28 inches long with an excellent sharp, bright bore. I rate the bore a solid 9.5 on a 1 to 10 scale, no pitting or frosting. There are two photos of the bore, one from the chamber end and one from the muzzle. There are slight lighting distortions in the photos, the bore is actually better than it looks in the photos. The front sight is the factory lug base with a pinned blade Marble insert with 1/16” gold bead. The rear barrel sight dovetail has a filler blank. The barrel retains 90% blue with numerous small handling/use marks along it’s length.
The action is smooth and mechanically excellent, feeds, chambers and ejects crisply. The take down feature locks up tight with no wear evident and indexes up tight with no over-travel. There is a Lyman 21 “climbing Lyman” peep sight mounted on the receiver. Judging from the bluing wear pattern it’s been there a long time. The fold down target aperture insert is present.
The black walnut shotgun buttstock and the forend are in very good condition with the Winchester hard rubber buttplate and the ebony forend insert present and in good condition. The wood stands proud above the metal and doesn’t look like it’s been sanded. It does appear to have been lightly cleaned and a coat of lacquer applied at some time in the past. Overall a classic 1895 Winchester that’s been used but not abused, and well cared for. With the excellent bore you should get fine accuracy with either cast or jacketed bullets.
