Description:
CIVIL WAR Era Antique MOORE’S PATENT FIREARMS All Metal No. 1 .41 Deringer

RARE & Beautifully Engraved CIVIL WAR Era Pistol

Here we present an antique Moore’s Patent Fire Arms Company No. 1 Deringer, also known as the All Metal No. 1, made circa 1863-65 in Brooklyn, New York. Only about 3,000 of these were made by Moore’s Patent Fire Arms between 1860 and 1865 before the company was purchased by National Arms. This scarce little Deringer was a likely choice for very concealable self-defense in the last half of the 19th Century. The entire barrel swivels on a hinge for loading, when the hammer is put into half cock and the release button is pushed. The hammer is split and acts as the rear sight when in full cock. These pistols were of all metal construction. It is of historical firearms significance in that it was the first large caliber metallic cartridge Deringer. In fact, after Moore’s was purchased by the National Arms Co., the Colt Firearms Co. bought National Arms and started making the pistol in 1870!

This all-metal Model No. 1 was originally manufactured by Moore's Patent Firearms in Brooklyn, New York, from 1860-65, followed by its successor, the National Arms Company, 1865-1870 (also located in Brooklyn, New York). During the National years, a 2nd version of this deringer was introduced with checkered walnut grips which was dubbed the "No. 2". In 1870, Colt purchased National Arms and scrapped its line of pocket pistols. The art of big companies purchasing smaller competitors to rid them of competition was probably as common practice in the late 19th century as it is today. However, since Colt did not have a single shot pocket model in its product line, it decided to continue the manufacture of the No. 1 and No. 2 Deringers which lasted all the way up to the year 1890. Of the all-metal Number 1's produced from 1860-1890 by three different companies, it's believed that Moore built approximately 3,000, National another 3,000 and Colt about 6,500 examples. Consequently, these are not found in large quantities on the collector market today.

The overall condition is good. Some original finish is present on the bottom of the barrel. Engraved frame and barrel. The action is strong. The bore is in good shape for its age. Sharp markings.
