Description:
Purdey BSLE 12 gauge SxS shotgun, with two sets of original barrels and cased in the maker’s leather trunk case with Purdey oiler, snap caps and two-piece cleaning rod.

Measuring the barrel diameters and chokes renders the following dimensions:   Both sets of barrels are 26" long.  All bores are .733; barrel set one is choked:  .009” & .021” (light IC & Mod); the second set of barrels are choked: .018” & .040” (light Modified and extra Full).  All are chambered 2 ¾” and all have nominal wall thicknesses of .032”.  Both sets of barrels have raised, slightly taper solid ribs that are 5/16” at the breech and ¼” at the muzzle.  All four bores are bright and shiny as you would expect.

The stock and forearm were fashioned from the traditional French Walnut that Purdey uses.  The strait grip (English) stock has a 14 ¼” LOP over a 1” full leather pad; 1 ½” DAC and 2” DAH with significant 3/8” RH cast at the heel and ½” at the toe.  The gun is fitted with a beavertail style forearm and Anson release.

Mechanical features:  Assisted opening action, double triggers, automatic safety and cocking indicators.

The gun weighs 7 lbs. 4 oz. with either barrel and balances at the hinge pin.  So the case is marked with a weight of 6 lbs. 12 3/4 oz.  I have removed the recoil pad to check for the addition of weight and there is none.  Thus I cannot answer the weight difference.  Manufactured in the late 60’s – early 70’s.

Condition of the gun is overall good.  The case coloring has faded to almost all dark grey and yet the engraving is still sharp and deep.  The trigger bow bluing is worn and the blue on barrel set one is thin at the chambers.  The second set (with tighter chokes is still 97%).

The wood is solid with no cracks or repairs, but the finish needs attention, and the checkering needs to be “pointed-up”.  Overall, the gun’s finishes are 95%.  Mechanically the gun is extremely solid and tight, telling me that this gun was carried on many upland hunts and yet it was well cared for and always put away cleaned!

This is a nice original two-barrel best gun set by the most iconic maker ever…Purdey.  And, it is ready for the next 50 years of hunting.
