Description:
The Walther PP was the first successful double action pistol and was introduced in 1929 as a firearm for use by policeman, hence the name “Polizeipistole” or “Police Pistol”. Shown here is a fairly unusual example of the PP, in the form of the British L66A1. This was .22 LR-chambered variant of which about 3000 were purchased by the British Royal Army Ordnance Corps in 1974. They were issued as Personal Defense Weapons (PDW) to service members of the Ulster Defense Regiment during The Troubles in Ireland in the 70’s. The UDR was the first infantry regiment in the British Army to fully incorporate women into its structure. Uniquely for the British Army, the UDR was on continuous active service throughout its 22 years of service from 1970 to 1992. The L66A1 was issued to the men and women of the UDR specifically for use off duty. It was recognized by the British Army that possible attackers would likely make their move after UDR members came off duty rather than on duty and so the Walther Pistol was issued. No definitive explanation exists as to why the .22 LR was chosen for the caliber instead of the .32 ACP or .380 Auto. A Major Ken McGinnis later acquired permission to purchase some Browning Hi Powers in 9mm Luger for £200 each as those would obviously be more suitable for self-defense. In 1980, many of the pistols were coated (they were originally parkerized) in a protective substance known as “Suncorite”. Unfortunately, it was later discovered that Suncorite is toxic in nature. Eventually, in the late 1980s, the Walther P5 was chosen as an official replacement for the L66A1. Surprisingly, the L66A1 was later imported into the United States by Inter Arms Corp. in Virginia. This example is in fairly excellent shape with some minor wear of the finish (mostly on the trigger guard) and light handling wear on the grips. The bore is in great shape as most of these pistols would not have been all that often. The “original” box is present so to speak, the boxes for these pistols being notorious for the fact that they were unmatching with the given pistol. Part of the sticker is damaged though the original info printed is still partly visible. The little right-hand nub that the lid latches over is gone, but the left-hand one remains, A second magazine is present. This would make an interesting addition to any Walther or military collection.
