SOLD  **  JOSEF JUST Extra Luxus Best Quality SLE Double, 20ga 28½” 3” mag.– cased, 98%

Description:
JOSEF JUST BEST QUALITY SIDE LOCK EJECTOR SXS DOUBLE 20 gauge, 3”magnum, 28 ½”  With super strong action and Cape Buffalo horn buttplate,* – only found on high-end handmade guns…Rare and probably one of a kind.

Josef Just is a world-renown gunmaker and one that is arguably the finest of that fraternity of best makers in Ferlach, a mecca of handmade best gunmakers (see below).

This classic top-quality double has a 28½” chopper-lump barrels with automatic ejectors and 3” magnum chambers made from high tensile Böhler special steel with Ferlach proofs, choked universally -- right (Cyl.) and left (ImpCyl). The hand-filed concave rib is fitted with a bead front sight.

An unusual action: Besides its horn buttplate which was chosen to accentuate the strong walnut black and yellow colors of the stock, the action locks up with the tried and true Purdey double underlug locking system, and for its 3” magnum ammo, this maker added the very intricate but powerfully strong third Greener type crossbolt lock which is practically concealed when closed.

From that point on, it is all English, a handmade best gun built with seven-pin sidelocks (instead of a boxlock) with cocking indicators.  Other features include bushed strikers, two triggers (with an articulated front trigger), automatic safety, and the renowned Holland & Holland selective Southgate ejectors. The action lever is hold-over and checkered for either the right hand or left hand shooter. The engraved action screw is fitted with a locking screw, and both are indexed – signs of a true handmade shotgun.

The full coverage engraving is the finest English rose and scroll with deep relief gold scrolls inlaid on both locks and the underside of the receiver-- executed by a Master Engraver. It is customary in Austria and Germany that master engravers do not sign their work. The engraving on this gun is custom and individual, and fit the maker’s marketing category of “Extra Luxus” when ordering higher-end engraving with extra fancy wood. The action work is finished in coin finish, preferred for quality engraving. The masterful engraving covers the side profiles, the fences, the receiver and the barrels where they meet the action. The chambers are engraved -- the pattern extends to the hinge pin. This is a clever design in high-art form. Besides its gold scroll inlay, the remainder of the underside is fully engraved as is the inlaid Deeley & Edge forearm release, the trigger bow and the upper and lower tangs. The upper and lower tangs are intricately inlaid into the stock at fine points.
Just examine the incredible engraving, all the engraved screw heads, and the meticulous wood to metal fit everywhere on the gun. Notice all the wood to metal joints, both wood and metal meet with sculptured shapes, never with straight butt joints. These are only found on handmade guns.

The stock work is as precise as the metal work.  Made of 5X fancy Turkish walnut, the deluxe figured stock is fitted with a hand checkered buttplate made of 11/16” genuine Cape Buffalo horn.* The styling is fully traditional English with classic comb, English straight-hand grip and English splinter forearm. The grain has great figure and vivid colors. If that isn’t enough, the point checkering is 26 lpi executed by a master checkerer using a combination of double and single borders in a multi-point patterns and having the appearance of wrapping the forearm broken up only by the forearm release centered in the pattern.

Measurements are 14 3/8” length of pull from front trigger to buffalo butt plate with 1 ½” drop at comb and 2 1/4” drop at heel. Weight is 6.72 lbs or 3.05 kg.

According to the Blue Book of Gun Values, all guns by this maker are custom order with a delivery time of three years.

Condition: This shotgun is in “excellent plus plus” condition showing little use – nearly mint, easily 98%. It retains all the blue on the barrels and all the polished coin finish on the frame and sidelocks. The wood shows a few very faint marks not through the finish, and the checkering looks the way it left the maker in 1994. The bores are mint and ring like chimes.  The shotgun remains mechanically perfect with fitted leather trunk case.  Case accessories include key, two silver nickel snap caps, silver nickel oil bottle, two-piece cleaning rod and compartment for cleaning brushes.

*About the buffalo horn buttplate: Rare and only found on best guns, a similar F.lli. Rizzini 20 gauge sidelock with ¾” buffalo butt plate and no gold work recently sold for $49,875, see last photo. A YouTube video just recently featured an English Halloway & Naughton Boss-type over and under with a ¾” buffalo butt plate, listed at $125,000.

Price: $14,950
