Description:
For consideration is a Thomas Bland & Sons break action express double rifle in .577 Nitro Express caliber. If one shop in the British gun trade was known for "heavy artillery” it was Thomas Bland. They built quite a reputation for waterfowling guns and powerful big-bore rifles. And this rifle qualifies as "heavy artillery". It was owned by one of the biggest proponents of big bore guns.....none other than the prolific gun writer and hunter Elmer Keith. Elmer Merrifield Keith (March 8, 1899 – February 14, 1984) was an American rancher, firearms enthusiast, and author. Keith was instrumental in the development of the first magnum revolver cartridge, the .357 Magnum (1935), as well as the later .44 Magnum (1956) and .41 Magnum (1964) cartridges, credited by Roy G. Jinks as "the father of big bore handgunning." Keith was born in Hardin, Missouri, and overcame serious injuries that he had sustained at age 12 in a fire when he was living in Missoula, Montana..The .577 Nitro Express is a large bore centerfire rifle cartridge designed for the purpose of hunting large game such as elephant. This cartridge is used almost exclusively in single-shot and double express rifles for hunting in the Tropics or hot climates in general and is a cartridge associated with the golden age of African safaris and Indian shikars. As would be expected everything about this rifle is over built and strong.  Everything works as it should....it breaks open smoothly and closes very solidly. The front sight is hooded and the rear express sight has blades regulated to several different distances. The rifle is attractively engraved but not overdone. The stock and forend are fashioned from very nice walnut. The barrel has a front sling attachment and the stock has a sling stud at the rear. The length of pull is 14 1/2" to front trigger. The rifle weighs 9lbs 6oz which is heavy but it will help to tame the recoil. The right side of the stock has a brass plate inlayed with "Elmer Keith" engraved into it. It has some handling/use marks but nothing serious. This wonderful rifle would not only be a joy to shoot and hunt with but it would be a solid investment since it belonged to Elmer Keith. Beast of a rifle. There will never be another one like it.
