Payment Types Accepted: Visa,Master Card, Discover,Check Description: Here we have an honest and true Civil War era .50 caliber Smith Carbine made by Massachusetts Arms Co. in Chikopee Falls, MA. The Smith Carbine was a 0.50 caliber breech-loading rifle patented by Gilbert Smith on June 23, 1857 and successfully completed the military trials of the late 1850s. It was used by various cavalry units during the American Civil War. The Smith Carbine was unique in that it broke apart in the middle for loading and it used rubber cartridges which sealed the gases in the breech. The carbines were built by Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts; the American Machine Works in Springfield, Massachusetts; or the American Arms Company in Chicopee Falls. The name of the distributor for the manufacturer, Poultney & Trimble of Baltimore, Maryland, is stamped on the carbine's receiver. This example has lost most of it's original finish and has worn to a handsome warm grey patina. The stock and forend are in good condition - it looks like a skillful repair was done on the left side of the stock at some point in time. The rifle is in generally good condition considering it's age and how it has likely been used over time. The half cocked and full cocked positions do not work when the muzzle is pointed up but do work when the muzzle is pointed down - so something is loose in the action or a spring is broken. This is an honest and true piece of history and if it could talk it would have stories of adventure and possibly danger.
