CONFEDERATE USED SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1861 RIFLE MUSKET DATED 1861. Rifled .58 cal. 40” barrel. From an old Virginia pre-WW2 collection of weapons from the Battle of Petersburg. Original with shortened forend and no ramrod or rear sight. Sling swivels removed. Lock stamped “U.S. SPRINGFIELD” and dated 1861. Typical Confederate cut down alteration seen later in the war. Fair condition with old metal patina and the original worn stock finish. Colorful and rare 1861 dated Springfield.
