Description:
General Specs: Winchester, Year 1905, .30WCF, 6lbs. 14oz., LOP 13 1/3"
Serial Number: 256861
The Winchester 1894 was the first lever rifle able to fire the high-pressure smokeless powder that became available at the end of the 19th century with the .30 WCF cartridge, or better known as the    .30-30.  This fine 1894 Deluxe Takedown Short Rifle, sn256861, was made in 1905 with many special-order features, including DELUXE WOOD, OIL FINISH, CAPPED PISTOL GRIP BUTTSTOCK, “H” STYLE CHECKERING, SHOTGUN BUTT, 22” EXTRA LIGHT BARREL, ½ MAGAZINE TUBE, AND IT IS A COVETED TAKEDOWN MODEL.  Anybody that knows the Winchester Model 1894 realizes how rare it is to find a special-order rifle with all these features.  We have thoroughly inspected this Model 1894 and it is factory correct in every way.  The photos will show the internal stampings on the top tang and in the wood under the top tang that demonstrate the wood to be original to the gun. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find a Model 1894 with much of the original factory finish remaining.  This rifle has not been molested in any way, retaining Winchester factory finishes on all metal and wood.  The barrel and magazine tube are 98%, BORE RATES 9.5 OUT OF 10 mirror shiny with crisp rifling.  The action retains 95% original blue, has excellent screws, and functions flawlessly.  The lever shows 93% case color, hammer retain 97% case color, beginning to fade but all there.  The wood is beautifully figured walnut terminating in a Winchester hard rubber shotgun style butt plate retaining most all the factory finish with light handling marks.  There is a CODY FIREARMS MUSEUM WINCHESTER FACTORY LETTER THAT COMES WITH THE GUN THAT NOTES ALL THE SPECIAL-ORDER FEATURES.  You will note the letter states the barrel to be 24” in length which is in error.  We know this for certain by several undisputable facts regarding this rifle’s measurable features.  First, short rifles (rifles with 22” barrels) were shipped with short forends measuring 8 3/8”, as this one measures.  Rifles with 24” barrels had 9 3/8” forend wood.  Second, the end of the muzzle measures 9/16” diameter as is proper for a Winchester extra light 22” barrel.  This 9/16” diameter is the same for a rifle with a 24” extra light barrel in .30 WCF caliber.  If the rifle originally had a 24” barrel that had been cut to 22”, the muzzle diameter would be measurably greater diameter.  There were errors in the records and changes in order specifications, and this is one of them without any doubt.  This information is taken from George Madis’ seminal volume “The Winchester Book”, considered to be the bible on Winchester rifles. As noted, these measurable specifications are not disputable. What a great piece of history we have in this 118-year-old rifle.  Winchester lever guns have been very strong, investment quality tangible assets, and special-order rifles in high original condition are sure to continue gaining value.  Just imagine stalking a fine buck with this Deluxe Rifle in the very capable .30-30 caliber and taking game with such a fine piece of American history!  Thanks for looking.
