This revolver comes from the collection of Jim Supica, the renowned firearms expert who has specialized in Smith & Wessons as well as serial number ones. Per the 1983 letter by S&W historian Roy G. Jinks, this revolver was shipped 28 January 1887 to large Chicago hardware dealer Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co., a major supply hub that was on the edge of the Western Frontier at the time. The letter explains that out of 2,072 revolvers so chambered, 786 were rechambered for Japan, thus leaving the number of originally .44-40 chambered guns at 1,286. The overall condition is fine. Original blue finish and case colors. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The mother of pearl grips are in good condition overall with a few minor chips. The numbers match: no. 3! The oaken case fits nicely and is of the style that English handguns, specifically Colts typically came in from London retailers in the late-19th Century. The case is near-fine as it does show some use and wear. Both of the letters are on Smith & Wesson letterhead with the 1983 letter showing the company watermark and the 2015 letter from Jinks to Supica is handwritten and wet signed. When else might you get the opportunity to own a single digit Smith & Wesson in a rare chambering that was once in the collection of Jim Supica? Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 6-1/2 inches. Caliber: .44-40 WCF (Winchester Center Fire) Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
