Description:
CIVIL WAR PRUSSIAN Antique POTSDAM Model 1809/31 Percussion INFANTRY Musket

Made Circa 1835 at the Armory at Neisse w/ BAYONET

Here we present an antique Prussian Potsdam Model 1809/31 Percussion Musket, manufactured circa 1835 at the Neisse Arsenal. The Potsdam musket was the standard infantry weapon of the Royal Prussian Army from the 18th century until the military reforms of the 1840s. Four models were produced, including the Model 1723, the Model 1740, the Model 1809, and the Model 1809/31, as is this one.

The Model 1809 was originally made in the flintlock format, with production after 1831 changing the name to the Model 1809/31 and shifting to the more modern and reliable percussion firing system. This musket would have been used in Prussian conflicts during the 1840s and 50s, including the Egyptian-Ottoman War, the Greater Poland Uprising, the Revolutions of 1848, and the First Schleswig War, before being sold to the United States government in the first years of the American Civil War. Though thoroughly obsolete, both the Union and the Confederacy were desperate for small arms as the South had little capability to make their own and the North had to scramble to ramp up their own production.

The overall condition is good. Robust action. The bore is in good shape for its age. Solid with less than average wear. Legible markings. “1835” dated. This example includes two bayonets, and both are good. “976” is marked on the barrel tang. Unlike most of these rifles, this musket still retains its original sling swivels!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 41-1/4 inches.

Caliber: .72 percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
