The Tula Arsenal was a Russian weapons manufacturer founded by Tsar Peter I of Russia in 1712 in Tula, Tula Oblast as the Tula Arsenal. Throughout its history, it has produced weapons for the Russian state. Its name was changed from Tula Arsenal to Tula Arms Plant during the Soviet era. These pistols were issued to Russian officers, mounted artillery, dragoon, cuirassier, hussar, and Cossack troops during the Napoleonic Wars. This pistol is dated “1813” on the lock and has Tula in Cyrillic above the date and “Y” at the tail. The trigger guard has Tula Royal Ordnance stamps along with “GOE” carved in the bottom of the stock along with the Model 1809 standard features. 1813 was significant as the year Napoleon and his Grande Armée were steadily pushed back to France by the Allies which ultimately ended with his abdication in early 1814. La Grande Armée, French for “The Great Army”, was the main military component of the French Imperial Army commanded by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte during the Napoleonic Wars. From 1804 to 1808, it won a series of military victories that allowed the French Empire to exercise unprecedented control over most of Europe. Widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest fighting forces ever assembled, it suffered enormous losses during the disastrous invasion of Russia in 1812, after which it never recovered its strategic superiority. The overall condition is fair. Dark patina. The action lacks spring tension but you can feel half-cock and full-cock. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock is solid and showing lots of wear. The front ramrod tube has been repaired and the barrel band at the muzzle has been modified or could be a replacement. A rare Russian military flintlock, especially to be in the US! Own the original!
