Description:
REMINGTON-ELLIOT Antique RING TRIGGER .32 RF PEPPERBOX Pistol WILD WEST

Civil War Era 4-Shot Deringer Pistol

Here we present an antique Remington-Elliot .32 Caliber Pepperbox Pistol, made in Ilion, New York, also known as Remington’s “New Repeating Pistol (Elliot’s Patent) No. 2”. Manufactured from 1863 to 1888, this is a four shot, .32 caliber ring trigger pistol using a cluster of stationary barrels and a revolving firing pin, similar in concept to the Sharps Pepperboxes. It features a German silver blade front and frame notched rear sights.
This pepperbox is functionally double action only, with the concealed hammer operated entirely by the motion of the ring trigger. The grip section is contoured so the butt rests on the ring finger. This repeating design was able to utilize the new rimfire ammunition like Smith & Wesson, without infringing on Smith & Wesson’s Rollin White Patent for bored through chambers on a revolver’s cylinder. They made very nice, easy to use and compact firearms for 19th century conceal and carry.

Though not a primary military arm during the American Civil War, handguns like this were commonly privately purchased by soldiers for use on the battlefield. Whether legend or fact, it is interesting to note something commonly read about pocket pistols of the day, is that while they could be used for self-defense against the enemy, many soldiers kept them on their person to defend themselves against an unwanted amputation in the primitive field hospitals that were notorious, even in their day.

The overall condition is good. The bores are in good shape for their ages. Most parts of the action function, but the firing pin does not rotate. Solid grips. Markings are legible. Numbers match.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-3/8 inches.

Caliber: .32 Rimfire
