Description:
GOLD and SILVER ACCENTED Spanish PATILLA MIQUELET 72 “MILITIA” Belt Pistol

ENGRAVED Popular Throughout EUROPE & OTTOMAN EMPIRE

Here we present an antique Engraved Spanish Patilla, or “Militia” Miquelet Belt Pistol, made circa 1817 in Spain. The miquelet was an early and sturdy form of flintlock popular throughout Europe and the Ottoman Empire from the seventeenth into the early twentieth century A “Miquelet” is a type of flintlock developed in Spain. It is a distinctive form of snaplock, originally as a flint-against-steel ignition form, once prevalent in Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Balkans, North Africa and the Ottoman Empire from the late 16th to the mid-19th centuries.

The miquelet lock, with its combined battery and pan cover was the final innovative link that made the flintlock mechanism possible. It proved to be both the precursor and companion to what we now call the "true" flintlock. This pistol saw a lot of Spanish history pass in its lifetime. This pistol has the distinctive patilla miquelet lock that continued to be used in Spain, Southern Europe, and other Mediterranean states long after northern regions had adopted the true flintlock.

The maker’s mark “V/BAR/ZAB/AL” is on the trigger guard and the maker’s mark “JPH/A/GUI/RRE” with “IN EIBER” and “ANO DE 1817” is on the barrel.

The overall condition is very good. Strong action. The bore is bright, slightly dimming at the muzzle. Nicely checkered grip. Solid stock throughout with an average amount of wear. Markings are legible. Much of the original gold and silver accenting is present.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
