Description:
Offered is a Colt 1860 Army manufactured in 1863 with all matching serial numbers. This is as close to a $8,000-$9,000 Civil War Martial Revolver as you can get with exception of 4 small spots of mild pitting from long term storage in a holster which appears on the right and left side of the barrel as well as the right and left side of the cylinder. The revolver is otherwise extremely high original condition with lots of original finish and case color. The grips are original, perfect, cartouched and numbered to the gun. The naval scene is clear with the exception of the small areas of mild pitting on the cylinder (as mentioned). The pictures tell the whole story. It is fully martially marked with sub-inspector initials all over it. The triggerguard and backstrap are factory silver plated which has the experts scratching their heads. Was it special made by Colt for a distinguished soldier? A Colt letter might reveal the answer. You may have noticed in the pictures that the finish on this gun is more like the deep inky finish on guns produced by Colt for Civilian Sale. The Military guns had a "pastie blue finish" rather than the deep inky one of this gun and the Civilian produced guns has. This would also explain the silver wash on the trigger guard and.the backstrap. Because this gun is loaded with martial markings, it might have been intended for the Civilian Market but ended up in a Military shipment to fill a Government order.
