We are extra proud to offer this stunning example of a Winchester 1886, decked out as a special order deluxe lightweight takedown version. The XXX checkered walnut is absolutely gorgeous, one of the best we have had in years. Made in the year of our Lord 1908, it is hard to believe she is 115 years old. The original blue is still deep and rich, with some thinning near the muzzle, and, of course, on the receiver. The action is crisp and smooth, and works as designed. The bore of the 24 inch round barrel is very good, very bright with sharp rifling. She is chambered in .33 Winchester, a cartridge that was never loaded with black powder, unlike most other calibers of the era. The sights are also very special. The front is the classy Lyman number 4, with a matted ramp and ivory bead. The rear sight is one of my favorites, with the large V, the triangle, and the ability to fold flat. Finally, the upper tang is fitted with a Lyman folding peep sight, which has the sliding lock that can hold it in the folded postion without touching the wood. This rifle takes down in about 15 seconds, and locks back together just as fast. This was Winchester's high power model, replacing the model 1876. Designed by John Browning, the receiver was carved from a 40 ounce solid chunk of steel. As these rifles became more powerful, a secondary goal developed to lighten these big rifles. This lightweight version featured the 2 inch shorter tapered barrel, and the magazine tube is actually larger than the muzzle. The XXX wood is noted on the side of the tang, as well as an order number, which is repeated on the stock in the tang channel. These well made rifles are very much in demand, and deluxe versions often break into the 5 figure range for value. I will list this one for much less. If you have been looking for the right '86 to collect, for investment, or for an old fashioned elk hunt, but want the added clout of a special order deluxe, then look no further.
