Petmecky in 1893. Joseph Carl Petmecky (1842-1929) is a Texas legend, a gunsmith, spur maker and a lawman. His gunsmithing skills brought him a variety of well-known customers, including Sam Houston, Benjamin McCulloch, and William A. A. “Big Foot” Wallace. Petmecky rebored the rifle belonging to Sul Ross and molded the bullet that killed Comanche Chief Puhihwitsikawsu, also known as Iron Jacket. He enlisted as a private with Company C of the Thirty-third Texas Cavalry Regiment on October 13, 1862, after the implementation of the Confederate draft and worked in the ordnance department at Fort Brown and then with Tom Green in the New Mexico campaign. Shortly after Civil War Petmecky and other veterans, under the leadership of George R. Freeman apprehended forty or so men robbing the state treasury who took $ 17,000 worth of gold and silver. Petmecky's famous "OK" spurs influenced spur makers across the US and were used by Texas Rangers and well known cattlemen. The gun for sale is in good overall condition, with heavy patina throughout which is typical of heavily used Texas guns. Original barrel was period shortened and lightly engraved. I included a correct extra 7" 32 cwcf barrel with a matching patina and very good bore if you wanted to bring the gun to its original condition. Bore is very good, action works but not as good as new. No license needed to buy excpt NJ and NY residents. SOLD Antique: Yes |
