Favorite Rifle of ANNIE OAKLEY Made in 1891
Here we present an antique J.M. Marlin Model 1889 Rifle in .38 Winchester Center Fire, made in 1891 in New Haven, Connecticut. Dubbed as the “New Safety Repeating Rifle,” the 1889 Marlin was a mid-sized, redesigned Model 1888. It was chambered in the same cartridges (.32-20, .38-40, and .44-40) plus the .25-20. This was Marlin’s first solid top and side ejecting rifle and it is what virtually all future Marlin rifles would be based upon. The side ejection concept was something that Lewis Hepburn, a very notable firearms designer who worked for himself as well as Remington before Marlin.
This one has a 26” barrel of which only 3,729 were produced. This one has had the magazine tube shortened and the slot under the barrel near the muzzle has been filled with what seems to be lead or pewter.
The overall condition is good. This one wears an old refinish. The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The butt stock has been repaired at the wrist around the tang.
