BRITISH OFFICER’S FUSIL FLINTLOCK .70 Musket King George III TOWER Antique
WAR of 1812, NAPOLEONIC WARS
Here we present an antique British Officer’s Flintlock Fusil in .70 Caliber, made circa the early 1800s in Birmingham, England. The lock is marked “TOWER” and “CROWN/GR”, the royal cipher for King George (Latin: Georgius Rex). There is a Board of Ordnance broad arrow as well. A second GR broad arrow can be found atop the barrel with a Birmingham proof.
This smaller bore, lightweight smoothbore musket is commonly referred to as a fusil. Fusils such as these were made for use by officers, fusiliers, volunteer regiments, and even militia units. This fusil follows the Brown Bess in form with its barrel secured by pins rather than bands. The barrel is 40” in length, a bit shorter than the regular 2nd pattern Brown Bess of 42”, with a smaller bore of .70 rather than .75.
The Second British Empire was the empire fighting against Napoleon Bonaparte of France and the dominant power in much of continental Europe at the beginning of the 19th century when this musket was made. A series of wars, known collectively as the Napoleonic Wars, extended French influence to much of Western Europe and into Poland and Russia. At its height in 1812, the French Empire had 130 departments, ruled over 70 million subjects, maintained an extensive military presence in Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Duchy of Warsaw, and counted Prussia and Austria as nominal allies.
The overall condition is very good. Very nice uniform patina throughout. The action is excellent and holds both notches. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock is solid.
