Description:
General Specs: Johann Nowotny , Year 1922, 16 Gauge, 6lb 5oz, Chokes IM/MI, LOP 14 1/4" , DAH 2 5/16", DAC 1 7/16"
Serial Number: 12956
The Prague gunsmith Johann Nowotny is considered as one of the best gunmakers of the late nineteenth century. Johann Nowotny was born in 1839, set up his business in 1865 and exhibited in many of the international exhibitions of the age. Johann Nowotny died in 1893 his company passing on to his wife and then Anton Novotny until his death in 1938. This example, serial number 12956 was manufactured in March 1922. The shotgun exhibits many qualities of a deluxe gun such as Dolls head barrel lug, decorative side panels with English scroll and arcaded fences, wood to metal fit is excellent. The forend uses an Anson type push release typically seen on Purdey and Boss guns. The action operates with a hidden Greener type X bolt through the action making for a very secure lock-up. The Hinge is tight. The factory bluing has mostly turned to a nice, aged silver gray while the barrels display 95% bluing turning to patina. Weighing just 6lb 5oz this is a light and handy shotgun, it would be an ideal gun for those day long upland hunts. Both bores are excellent, nitro proofed, and both choked Improved Mod. The furniture has moderate figure showing field wear, it has a horn buttplate and sling mounts. This once deluxe shotgun would be a great candidate for restoration. If you would like to consider adding to the value of this gun and preserving its heritage and making it “Second to none”, please call Vintage Firearms Inc to enquire about our extensive gunsmithing services. Thanks for looking!
