London Made BALL GUN from the mid-19th Century
Here we present an antique I. Hollis & Sons Percussion Ball Gun made circa 1862 in London, England. Hollis & Sons started out in the early part of the 19th century with the name of “Hollis Brothers”. It continued under that trade name until 1845 when it was re-named “Hollis Brothers & Co. which continued until 1848, when it became “Hollis & Sheath” after Isaac took on Isaac Brentnall Sheath as a partner. This continued until 1861 when the firm changed its name to I. Hollis & Sons on the departure of Sheath.
Hollis & Sons became known as a supplier of pistols and shotguns, and also produced muskets, such as this example, that was possibly used for the North American Indian trade. This would have been a gun that could have taken down large game animals.
The overall condition is good. Original patina. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. This example sports a hearty stock with an expected amount of wear and a few stable cracks. Legible markings. Absent ramrod. The pistol grip pommel is separated, but included. The lock is proof marked “MAKERS TO HER MAJESTY WAR DEPARMENTS”.
