The Smith & Wesson Model 39 was developed for the U.S. Army in 1954 however, it was not accepted and went on the civilian market in 1955. It was the first generation of Smith & Wesson's semi-automatic pistols. The Model 39 was produced from 1954 until 1983. The Model 39-2 was introduced in the early 1970s. 9mm Luger
