This is an early W. & C. Scott side by side hammer shotgun marked "W & C. SCOTT & SON. MAKERS & PATENTEES LONDON" on the barrel rib manufactured in 1884. The massive "B" grade shotgun weighs in at 12 lbs 10 Oz. and has border scroll work with a beautiful engraved dog's head on the left lockplate. The side plates are marked "W. & C. SCOTT & SON" with the lever marked PATENT". The underside of the barrels are marked with the serial number along with proofs and "CHOKE", "9B", "10M" and "NOT FOR BALL". The barrel flats have the appropriate British proof marks with the water table having the W & C Scott Patent for the action. All numbered parts have matching serial numbers. The gun is in near excellent condition with the fine Damascus barrels retaining much of the original thumbprint pattern ranging from brown toning to a pleasant pewter grey and free of any major dents with only some isolated surface use marks and scratches. The side plates, hammers and protected areas of the frame retain much of the original vibrant case color fading to a smoky gray on the use and carry points. The finely checkered walnut stock with horn capped pistol grip is now solid with an excellent professionally spliced wood repair on the lower left side of the wrist and a small corner chip repair on the right side that are so well done as to be hard to find. The finely checkered forearm rates excellent and is solid with only some very minor use marks. The stock sports a silver oval name plate and horn grip cap and butt plate that rate near excellent. The LOP is 14 1/8" with drops of 1 ??" and 1 7/8" at the comb and heel respectively. The barrels are on face with a tight lock up and the lever resting just right of the center. The hammers cock and release with a crisp trigger pull. A beautiful and rare, very large bore, W. & C. Scott waterfowl shotgun that could still be shot with the proper low pressure loads.
