Description:
SLIDING BAYONET Antique Boxlock .58 “MANSTOPPER” Percussion POCKET Pistol

Mid-1800s SELF DEFENSE Coat/Pocket Pistol

Here we present an antique Boxlock Percussion Pocket Pistol with a Sliding Bayonet, made circa the 1850s likely in Europe. With its .58 caliber “manstopping” bore, this pistol would have been quite the deterrent against ne’er do wells and ruffians roaming the city streets in tumultuous Europe in the early to mid-1800s. It was of course, made primarily for self-defense, and very well would tell stories if it could. Its bore would have been very intimidating if by chance you were on the receiving end. And, after you had expended your one shot, you now had a slide bayonet blade to defend yourself with.

The “Pocket Pistol” name says it all. They were the "Saturday Night Specials" of the 16th-18th century. Before the Deringer, they were "Gentleman's" or "Muff Pistols", typically, a smaller pistol that was easily concealed. They were favored among the gentry and women because of these traits. Men would carry them concealed in a waistcoat pocket and women would hide them in a hand muff.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. Good bore. hand punched dots are present on the frame and barrel rib. Solid grip. A few uniform hand notches are present on the back of the grip. The sliding blade fully functions.
