Here we present an antique Brass Barrel British Ordnance W. Ketland & Company Flintlock Trade Pistol, made circa 1780 in London, England. Ketland & Company was one of the most prominent and active British makers of the day. John and Thomas Ketland were the sons of Thomas Ketland and grandsons of William Ketland, who had been making locks and guns for the colonies since the early 18th Century. The lock plate on this pistol is marked "W./ Ketland/& Co" ahead of the hammer. William Ketland was Thomas Ketland Senior’s eldest son. Thomas Ketland Senior was a highly successful Birmingham gun maker who started his business around the mid-1700s and expanded into the export market around 1790 before he died in 1816. William Ketland was originally a partner alongside his father and William Walker. He petitioned to liquidate his part in the company in 1800. The partnership was dissolved in 1801. He died in 1804 but the business carried on as “Ketland & Co.” to at least 1831.
Many gunmakers during this time were contracted with the Hudson Bay Company to supply these high-quality flintlock pistols. Most were traded to the Indigenous Indians in exchange for fur pelts that were eagerly desired in the European Fashion Trade. The Hudson Bay company was founded in May of 1670 primarily serving in the fur trading industry in its early years and has continued for 350 years to present day in London, England.
The overall condition is good. Robust action. This example remains in its original flintlock. The bore is in good shape for its age. Sharp markings. “LONDON” has been over stamped atop the barrel. Liege proof and British Ordnance style proof markings are present on the barrel. The stock has been lightly refinished over the years. A stable, thin crack is present towards the muzzle on the right side of the forend.
