Description:
Civil War kepi manufactured by BENT & BUSH out of Boston. They produced headgear before, during, and after the civil war for the U.S. military. Identified by a label as owned by Private John Franklin Pope of Co. A 13th Mass Infantry. Enlisted 7/24/1862 and was mustered out 8/1/1864. He was captured 7/1/1863 on the first day of the Battle of GETTYSBURG. He was held by the Confederates until 3/15/1864 when he was released. The tag, in my opinion, is not wartime, but put on by him ,or a family member , at a later date. It definitely could be 120 years old. He passed away 5/30/1920. Is this the kepi he wore at GETTYSBURG or after he was paroled in March of 1864? That answer is lost to time. But he definitely wore it sometime in service. The kepi does have some mothing nips as seen in pics and a repair in the right rear. Interior is fine as well as the brim. Has both eagle butons attaching chin strap. A great identifed kepi from a soldier in well fought unit from Massachusetts. The most famous and historical battle of the CIVIL WAR- GETTYSBURG! Please call 973-214-3407 with questions. Thankyou
