ONE OF THE VERY LAST OF THE .38-55 CALIBER M-94 CARBINES, #1085XXX, MADE DURING ONE OF THE WORST YEARS OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION IN 1932- TWO YEARS AFTER THE .38-55 WAS DISCONTINUED! All the guns made during the Great depression are interesting as sales were very limited and all but the best gunsmiths and finishers were let go. According to The Winchester Handbook by George Madis, the 32-40 and .38-55 calibers were discontinued in 1930, so obviously Winchester was using up what barrels remained in stock. The transition carbines made during this time retained the steel carbine butt plates of the earlier saddle ring carbines, but don't have saddle rings and the ladder rear sight of earlier carbines was replaced with the buckhorn variety along with the traditional earlier style non-ramped front sight. In 1932 only 3,679 1894s were made compared to 29,967 in 1927! By 1934 Winchester was down to producing only 1,192 M-94s! Production started picking up after that, but the years 1930-1934 had very limited production figures and carbines made during this time are relatively scarce with those in .32-40 and .38-55 quite rare! This is a fine example that retains nearly all the blue on the barrel and magazine and fine blue on the bolt. The balance of the uncleaned receiver blue has aged/flaked to evenly blending gray and brown with good blue on the loading gate- typical of receivers from this time period. The barrel has the late "MODEL 94" and "NICKEL STEEL" stamping with all markings sharp and clear. Exc. stock and forend show the lightest of handling only, tight action, strong safety half-cock on the hammer and MINTY BRIGHT BORE. An exceptionally rare 90 year old M-94. Very few were made in this caliber and very few are in collections today.
