The P-1853 was Britain’s adopted rifle from 1853 until the Snider system was adopted to transform arms into breech-loaders. In addition to its use around the world with the British military, this was one of the most popular arms for the infantry during the American Civil War. The Enfield 1853 rifle-musket was used by both the North and the South in the American Civil War and was the second most widely used infantry weapon in the war, surpassed only by the Springfield Model 1861 Rifled Musket. The Confederates imported more Enfields during the course of the war than any other small arm, buying from private contractors and gun runners. It has been estimated that over 900,000 P53 Enfields were imported into America and saw service in every major engagement of the war. These were “commercially” proofed and lacked the proofs and acceptance marks of those made for the British military. This musket shows extensive use and weathering. It is decorated with brass tacks (non-ferrous) and shows signs of having been shot a great deal. This was probably a captured or surplussed weapon from the American Civil War. “1861/TOWER” marked on the lock. Commercial proofs on the left side of the breech. Small stamps behind the trigger guard tang. There is a name in small capital block letters behind that. The portion of the stock behind the percussion nipple shows a large amount absent and the remainder with charring from firing this gun and probably climate/weather. The rifling is very worn. This gun shows every indication of being hard used for a long time on the frontier, quite possibly by American Indians. The overall condition is good. Strong action. Dim bore with some shallow rifling. Solid stock with apparent wear and use. Ramrod absent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 39 inches. Caliber: .577 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
