Description:
Antique CIVIL WAR Era E. A. PRESCOTT .32 Cal. Rimfire BELT Model Revolver

ENGRAVED Revolver Made During the American Civil War

Here we present an antique Engraved E. A. Prescott Belt Revolver, made circa 1861-63, in Worcester, Massachusetts. This scarce Civil War revolver is estimated to be one of only three hundred that were made of each of the two styles (Belt and Pocket) made by Prescott. Although similar in appearance to the early Smith & Wesson revolvers, this revolver was manufactured with a solid frame. They were available in .22 or .32 caliber, with the .22 calibers having a 3” barrel while the .32 calibers had a 5.75” barrel. The markings on both the Pocket and the Belt revolvers were the same.

It was wartime and the United States stood divided. During a period of rapid industrial innovation, the firearms industry was one of the hottest. The war drove a huge market and many different makers, designs and patents appeared in a very short amount of time. Some of Colt’s most coveted patents expired in 1857, opening opportunities for other gun makers.

The frame is all brass with a contoured side plate and the cylinder is a six shot with locking notches at the rear. The latch for the arbor is on the front of the frame. It has a serial number, or possibly a batch number of “91” on the bottom of the frame.

The overall condition is good. The action functions, although the cylinder does not lock up. This example has a very good bore for its age, and it remains semi-bright. The frame and cylinder are crudely hand engraved with floral designs. The left griphas had a repair and “AR” is marked on the left. Barrel address marks have been polished away.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 5 inches.

Caliber: .32 Rimfire

Overall condition as seen in photos.
