Kentucky Style INDIANA Made HUNTING Rifle
Here we present an antique Samuel Beck Long Rifle, made circa the mid-1860s in Indianapolis, Indiana. In the Marion County and Indianapolis area in the mid-1800s, Christian Beck, Samuel Beck, Jacob Beck and William Beck worked as gunsmiths building flintlock rifles, percussion rifles, pistols, and shot guns. Their firearms are marked with their names stamped or signed into the barrels. The Becks had gun shops listed in Indianapolis and they were listed in the Indianapolis City Directory from 1858 onward. Samuel Beck was born in Pennsylvania in 1809. He built full and half stock rifles, pistols, flintlocks, percussion rifles & shotguns in Indianapolis, Indiana from 1861-1885. He is listed as the owner of the gun manufacturing company “Samuel Beck & Son” in Indianapolis. The business was located at 63 East Washington Street, Indianapolis.
Its stout octagonal barrel is in .31 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many makers’ names of the so-called Kentucky long rifles have been lost over time.
The overall condition is good. The action is excellent with a crisp set trigger. The set trigger must be set. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The front and rear sights are replacements. The maple stock has been repaired all the way around the lock inletting portion. This is stable and solid.
