This is a very early, West German-manufactured pistol, made ca. 1975, that has matching numbers on the frame, early "humpback" slide, and barrel. The metal retains nearly all of the original matte blue finish on the slide, and a commensurate amount of black anodized finish on the alloy frame. No commercial proofs are present on the pistol. The grips are presentation grade, checkered wood with very little wear or flattening of the points evident. Two magazines are included, as well as an early P-220 instruction manual. In his book "Das Grosse Buch der SIG-Pistolen" (1995), Lorenz Vetter pictures serial #P84318 (23 numbers ahead of this example) on page 191, which is listed as a prototype P.75 (P-220) for the Swiss Army. That pistol has a large "Versuchwaffe - Serie" (Experimental Weapon & Series) stamp on the left side of the slide whereas this example has the Sig-Sauer logo in its place. The "P" serial prefix and lack of commercial proofs indicates an in-house pistol not meant for commercial sale, while the high grade wooden grips may indicate that the pistol was presented as a gift or meant for display. This is a very handsome and unusual pistol, in excellent condition, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. FFL SOLD |
