Hunting/Sporting HOMESTEAD Shotgun
Here we present an antique Engraved G.G. Julcher Double Barrel Side by Side Percussion Shotgun, manufactured circa the 1850s. G. G. Julcher was a Philadelphia gunmaker who was active from around 1840 to the beginning of the Civil War era.
This 16 gauge shotgun was a popular gauge, due to the ability to use it for medium or large size game, along with waterfowl. Its relatively 26-1/4 inch barrels made for easy hunting in the dense woods or traipsing through the marsh looking for ducks and geese. This would have been a staple of most homesteads hanging over the mantle during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s to provide food or to defend the homestead.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bores are in good shape for its age. The stock on this example remains in very good shape with an average amount of wear. Smooth, even brown barrel patina. God inlay breech bands. Markings are legible. Engraved locks. Sharply checkered wrist. The barrel pin is a replacement.
