Description:
SPECIAL ORDER 1886 .45-70 22" EXTRA LIGHT RIFLE WITH FULL MAGAZINE, NICKEL STEEL BARREL, WILL LETTER #122XXX, MADE 1900. This is a fairly early example as the Extra Light .45-70 rifles with 22"  barrels began around serial number 115000 (1897-1898). The standard for this model had a half-magazine with full magazines offered as special order and are a fairly uncommon and desirable feature. I called the Cody Museum on this one and it will letter (call in sheet included) as shown in the photo with all features verified (sights are rarely mentioned in the records). Interestingly, the caliber is listed as ".45-72" (the barrel is marked .45-70) and to my knowledge there is no such caliber- there is a .40-72 used in the Model 1895, but no .45-72. Also interesting, in Arthur Pirkle's excellent book For Collectors only, Winchester Lever Action Repeating Firearms, Volume 2, The Models 1886 and 1892, he lists all the calibers for the 1886 including experimental calibers etc. and lists four made in .45-72. It's my feeling that this is just a mistake written in the records as the caliber is clearly .45-70 and there is no .45-72. Letter mentions "Smokeless" and the barrel is marked "NICKEL STEEL" verifying this. This is a fine example with excellent blue on the receiver sides and bolt with gray on the receiver ring, bottom and a little on the forward lower portion of the receiver and upper tang only. About all the deep barrel and mag blue remains. The receiver is also fitted with a desirable Lyman 21 sight ("Climin' Lyman) with small folding aperture intact, buckhorn rear barrel sight with elevator bar intact and a Lyman "Jack" front sight- half moon with ivory bead. The wood is generally excellent with tight wood to metal fit and correct Winchester embossed hard rubber butt plate as mentioned in the Cody Call-in sheet. Forrend cap still retains much original blue. Tight action with strong safety half-cock on the hammer and minty bright and sharp bore, fine screws and some case color remains on the hammer. Overall a very fine special order  124 year old 1886.
