Description:
For Sale is this wonderful piece of U.S. Military history.  The M1 Carbine was adopted on October 22, 1941, and was subsequently used by every branch of the U.S. Military during WWII, the Korean War, and even by some units during the Vietnam War.  During WWII, ten primary U.S. contractors manufactured approximately 6 million U.S. .30 Caliber Model M1, M1A1, M2, T3, and M3 Carbines.  National Postal Meter in Rochester, NY was one of those contractors, only making the M1 Model, and they were responsible for about 6.8% of the total Carbine production during the war.  This is one of only 413,017 M1 Carbines made by NPM.  The serial number 4,252,776 makes it a 3rd block production, manufactured in early 1944.  Many of the contractors making Carbines during the war shared parts to meet critical delivery schedules, so it is extremely rare to find an "all-matching" wartime M1.  NPM specialized in making bolts, receivers, trigger housings and slides, and many agree that NPM made one of the highest quality Carbines even though they only made 4 parts and relied on a large number of subcontractors to supply the addtional materials.

This rifle comes from the private collection of a Korean War Veteran who recently passed away.  He was "the guy" when it came to U.S. Military firearms.  I wish I had 1/10th of the knowledge he did when it came to M1 carbines, but I will do my best to describe this rifle using the book I found in his house, "U.S. M1 Carbines, Wartime Production" by Craig Riesch.  The rifle is in overall good-very good condition showing normal signs of use.  The action is very smooth and the bore is beautiful and bright with very nice rifling.  The front sight is marked "L" which indicates Winchester production.  The Type III barrel band with bayonet lug is marked "C" which also indicates Winchester production.  The barrel is correctly marked "MARLIN", who supplied thousands of barrels to NPM during the war.  The front of the receiver has the standard "U.S. CARBINE CAL. 30 M1" marking while the rear is marked "NATIONAL POSTAL METER 4252776".  The Type III rear sight is marked "I.R. CO. 7160060".  The stock appears to be original showing the expected light dings and abrasions from the rifle's many years of service, and maintains the Ordnance Department Crossed Cannon cartouche final acceptance mark on the right side.  The sling well is marked "BR-B" indicating it was manufactured by Milton Bradley Co. in Springfield, Mass.  There is also a "P" over "U" marking on the grip.  The handguard is marked "OI" (Overton Inland) and matches the stock nicely.  The Type IV rotary safety and the Type IV "M" marked magazine catch were introduced in 1945, and were put on any Carbines that remained in service after the War.  The trigger housing is correctly marked "N" on one side and "9" on the other, indicating NPM production, and the Type I slide is marked "W" once again indicating Winchester production.

I test fired this rifle myself with no issues, and had a great time doing it, but it is the responsibility of the buyer to have this firearm inspected for safety by a competent gunsmith before using it.  Also included with the rifle is "two" 15-rd box magazines, marked "BW" (Winchester production) and "MN" (National Postal Meter production), tack-welded together.  Overall, this is a fine example of U.S. Military history that would make an excellent addition to any collection.  Feel free to call or text with any questions or for more pictures.  Thank you.
