Description:
Weatherby Mark V Deluxe 378, Japan Era, African Sights

Guns International #: 102582857
Lister Inventory #:

Description:
Make: Weatherby

Model: Mark V Deluxe African

Serial Number: G52970

Year of Manufacture: 1970s

Caliber: .378 Weatherby Magnum

Action Type: Bolt Action Rifle with Internal Hinged Floorplate Magazine

Barrel Length: 26" + 2" muzzle brake

Sights/Optics:  The front sight is a hooded brass beaded blade dovetailed to a checkered ramped riser that is screwed to the barrel. Hood is missing. The rear sight is a fixed V-notch that is finely adjustable for elevation and dovetailed to a boss which is screwed to the barrel. The top of the receiver has two pairs of drilled and tapped holes for standard MKV bases.

Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is beautiful one piece skip-line checkered walnut with a high gloss finish, a raised Monte Carlo comb with a cheekpiece, and a capped pistol grip with deluxe diamond inlay. There is a brown rubber ventilated Weatherby recoil pad mounted on the butt with a black and white spacer. There is a rosewood grip cap with tan spacer and a tan diamond shaped piece of wood inlet into its bottom surface. There is also a rosewood nose cap with a white spacer. There is a sling swivel stud in the belly and on the forend. Sparsely scattered small compressions and draglines are seen dispersed throughout the wood. One more notable scratch can be seen on the right side of the forend just behind the forend cap. There are no chips or cracks. The checkering is sharp. The LOP measures 13 3/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the recoil pad. The pad shows light-moderate rub wear along the edges and remains pliable. The stock is in Fine-Excellent overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this seller's opinion, this bore rates 10 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The crown is crisply blued with no visible wear. The finish on the bolt is bright and clean. The raceway shows little to no visible wear. The action shows minor operational wear. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks on the stock. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in excellent condition. The original front sight post has been relocated backwards 1/2 inch in order to accomodate the muzzle brake.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. I fired this rifle and tested it at the range, 3 shot groups were within 3/4 of an inch using factory Weatherby 270 grain TSX loads. Recoil with the brake installed is quite reasonable, without brake it is rather brisk. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards. Trigger is crisp and measures right at 3 pounds.

Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: Weatherby box is present, appears not original to rifle as the calibre marking is different.

My Assessment The Weatherby Mark V is an iconic American sporting rifle that has been a staple of elite hunters for more than 70 years; reliable, robust, and accurate, it is one of the benchmarks by which all bolt action rifles are measured. This example is a Mark V Deluxe African with a blued finish, iron sights, 26” barrel, and checkered monte carlo comb stock. It was made in the Japan era and quality was precise and finishing techniques exquisite. Chambered for the potent .378 Weatherby Magnum, this will make a world class hunting rifle for the purchaser. The rifle appears to have spent more time in the safe than out, there are only a few marks on the wood. The rifle rates in Excellent condition and looks great, this would also make for a great addition to a Winchester collection. Please see my photos and good luck!
