Description:
AMF Mk 2 Mod 1 NAVY SPRINGFIELD US M1 GARAND 7.62x51 Rifle VIETNAM WAR Era

c1965 Conversion from .30-06 to 7.62x51mm NATO by AMF

Here we present a Springfield U.S. M1 Garand Rifle, originally manufactured in 1943 at Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. The .30-06 semi-automatic rifle was that standard U.S. service rifle during World War II and the Korean War and also saw service during the Vietnam War. Most were issued to U.S. forces, though some were also provided as foreign aid to American allies. To say that it was and is highly regarded would be an understatement. In the words of General Patton, “In my opinion, the M1 rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised.”

While the Marine Corps and the Army adopted the M14 replacement of the Garand in the late-1950s, the Navy decided to update existing M1 Garands from .30-06 to the newer 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge. To accomplish this a small block was added to prevent .30-06 from being loaded into the gun and chambers were sleeved (Mk 2 Mod 0). Later, new barrels were made in 7.62 NATO as the chamber sleeves did have a tendency to slide out (Mk 2 Mod 1).

This rifle features a receiver made by Springfield Armory circa August of 1943. The barrel is marked as having been made by SA and is marked 7.62 MM AMF -P- 7.62 NATO. The receiver leg is marked O 4 6 C with a diamond and D 28291 29. The op rod is marked 7790722 SA. The bolt is marked D28287-12SA/B3. The trigger group is marked D28290-16-SA. The hammer is marked C46008-2 SA.

The overall condition is very good. The action is excellent. The bore is bright and clean, tight (measuring .300), and has nice rifling. The stock is solid and shows signs of use. A nice example of one of the less common variants of the M1 Garand!
