“CAPE GUN” with HOUND & GAMEBIRD ENGRAVING

Here we present a C&R J. Peterlongo Double Barrel Side x Side Combination Rifle & Shotgun Hammer Cape Gun, manufactured circa the turn of the century in Innsbruck, Austria. Johann Peterlongo (1826-1898) Austrian gun maker who was active between 1854 and the time of his death circa 1918. He opened his factory in Innsbruck in 1854, known as the Tiroler Waffenfabrik Peterlongo, which continued operation into the 1970s.

These were typically high-end hunting weapons that featured a side by side configuration with one barrel rifled and the other smooth. The hunter would use the rifled barrel to fire long range, precise shots against large game and the smooth side could be loaded with a large ball or slug for a quick follow up shot, especially on large and dangerous game. Or the smooth bore could be loaded with shot to make it feasible to hunt fowl at the same time without carrying multiple guns. The gun has two triggers to allow either barrel as needed.

Cape guns made in Germany, Belgium, and Austria usually have the rifled barrel on the right side (as is this one), while British made cape guns are usually reversed. These were supremely handy sporting firearms that could also be used to defend the homestead or put game on the table.

The overall condition is fine. Original finish and clear engravings of the hunting dog and the game bird. Marked for 16 gauge and 9.3 on the bottom of the barrels. The actions are excellent. The bores are bright and in fine condition with the rifle bore sharply rifled. The stock is solid and showing some use. A fantastic double gun from Innsbruck!
