Description:
This is a very handsome sword that measures 39 1/4" overall, with a 33" straight, double-edged blade with narrow single fullers and intricate etched panels on both faces. The blade retains nearly all of the bright original factory polish, with only some scattered small spots of mild freckling on either side, mostly concentrated towards the tip. The obverse panel has delicate filigree motifs flanking a crown with sunburst, the Scottish Thistle, and the HLI crest (rifle horn with HLI within the loop). The reverse has the crown with sunburst, George V cypher, and retailer marking on the long ricasso: "C. REEVES & Co. / LTD / WEST ST / REGENT ST / LONDON / & W &." The guard has straight quillons with orb-shaped finials, grooved ferrule, and slightly worn shagreen grip with intact braided wire wrap and plumb bob-shaped pommel. The sword is housed in the original metal scabbard that has retained 95-97% of a black paint finish with some scattered areas of flaking and freckling. This is a splendid example of a Scottish cross-hilt broadsword, and would make a wonderful item for display.
