Description:
This U.S. Rock Island Arsenal Model 1903 bolt action rifle is a high number (double heat treated) model manufactured towards the end of RIA production in 1919 (serial number 3435xx). The rifle has a Sedgley replacement barrel dated 9 44 with a flaming bomb cartouche and the Sedgley "Circle S" marking. There is a "P" stamped on the underside of the barrel.
The rifle was sent to Greece after WWII and subsequently returned to the U.S. There are no import markings. The Greek usage is evidenced by the darker finish on the receiver, electropenciled last four digits of the serial number on the bolt, and stamping of the last four digits of the serial number on the right side of the buttstock. The letter "B" is stamped on the floorplate and an X stamped on the stock near the floorplate. These were common characteristics of Greek return 1903's. There is also an "O" stamped underneath the wrist of the stock and an "U" stamped in front of the rear sling swivel. The rear sling swivel has "RP" stamped on it.
The sights are the M1905 rear leaf and front post. The rifling is strong and the bore is good (see last picture in this listing). The rifle has a 5-round internal magazine that can be manually loaded or fed through a 5-round stripper clip (not included). The walnut stock and handguards have normal wear and handling marks such as dings and scratches. The buttplate shows normal wear.
