Description:
Serial #O7320, .303 British, 25" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a 1918-dated, Enfield-made rifle that has matching numbers on the receiver, bolt, and nosecap (the forend number is visible, but no longer legible). The metal has retained 90-92% of an arsenal reapplied finish that has silvered and faded along some of the high and exposed edges, as well as along the bearing surfaces of the bolt. The nosecap rivet head is missing on the right side. Further gray fading is present on the unmarked magazine, and the receiver ring is stamped with the post-independence "F/F" stamp (Fianna Fáil) of the Irish government. The buttstock is in very good condition with an "FR" repair stamp on the right side ahead of the unmarked stock disk, some minor handling marks and bruises on either side, as well as some surface hairline cracks at the left side of the wrist where it meets the receiver socket. The forend and handguards are in very good shape, with only some minor handling marks and small blemishes scattered about. The Republic of Ireland formed a new army following independence in 1921, and purchased SMLE rifles from Britain throughout the 1920s and 1930s. All of these rifles were stamped with the "F/F" mark, but the practice was discontinued during or after WW2. These rifles are not often encountered, and this example is in very good condition overall. FFL or C&R
